Ceremony and Dinner for Anita Garibaldi

 the Italian Ambassador to London, His Excellency Pasquale Terraciano and Signora Karen Terraciano will be present,

Dame Anita Garibaldi will be awarded with the Freedom of the City of London on 19^th June in the Chamberlain’s Court, Guildhall. At the arrival of Giuseppe Garibaldi in London on 21 April 1864 the Independent wrote: ‘Revolutionary, sex symbol, global celebrity – as romantic heroes Giuseppe Garibaldi really took the biscuit’.  Those words describe one of the Reform’s most intriguing Honorary Members whose visit to the Club was instigated by Sir Antonio Genesio Maria Panizzi, once Chief Librarian of the British Museum Library and prominent in founding the Club Library. Garibaldi received a hysterical welcome as he travelled through the streets of London to Pall Mall, where over two hundred Reform members gathered to meet him - an unforgettable occasion, recorded in the Reform Club’s archives. 150 years later the Garibaldi Committee, led by the Italian Embassy, have promoted a number of events to commemorate the great man’s momentous visit to London. Last 19^th May the Library and Museum of FREMASONRY of London inaugurated an Exhibition about Giuseppe Garibaldi which will be open till 29^th August. The Reform Club, Mrs. Audri Day and Sr. Dominic Pini members of the Garibaldi Oganizing Commitee have organized on 16th June a reception and a dinner. The Italian Ambassador to London, His Excellency Pasquale Terraciano and Signora Karen Terraciano will be present, together with other prominent members of the Italian community.  The main speaker is the historian Dr. Marcella Pellegrino Sutcliffe, Cambridge Research Fellow (Clare Hall). Her address, ‘Garibaldi’s London visit, prelude and aftermath’, will enlighten further on the Italian patriot and ‘liberator’, known as the ‘darling of the English establishment and radicals alike’.
